My first visit to Deadwood. Lived in East River Souh Dakota my entire life. My wife is from PA. She watches all the paranormal and ghost shows on tv. She has had several ghostly experiences from her past. I was a 100 % non believer in ghosts or the paranormal before I spent 1 night at the Bullock Hotel. Without a doubt that hotel is haunted. I am now a believer. I have seen proof with my own eyes. I highly recommend the Bullock. Would of gave it 5 stars without my paranormal experiences. The place has history. Kudos to the owners. And thank you!

Let me preface by saying I'm not a believer in ghosts. That said, I had a strange experience. I'm a contractor and always carry a thermal camera on me to check for water damage and poorly insulated windows. Anyways, I was in the basement and decided to film just for fun. The cool thing about thermal camera is that they can pick up footprints among other things. I saw a hot spot and started following it. I'll let you decide what I picked up...

Sabrina at the counter was very kind and helpful during our whole experience. Told us all about the ghosts that live there which was very interesting. W employee for sure. Great job Bullock Hotel

Why it's Haunted

The Historic Bullock Hotel in Deadwood, South Dakota holds the distinction of being the state’s most haunted location, built in 1895 by Sheriff Seth Bullock and Sol Star for $40,000 as Deadwood’s oldest hotel.

Despite dying at his home rather than the hotel, Sheriff Seth Bullock’s spirit has claimed the establishment as his eternal domain, continuing his legendary hospitality by touching guests, calling out to visitors, and ensuring hotel employees maintain his exacting standards of service.

His ghostly presence manifests most strongly in the restaurant and basement areas, where staff report feeling watched and guided by their spectral supervisor.

The hotel experiences extensive supernatural phenomena that defy logical explanation, including alarm clocks that activate independently throughout the night, televisions that turn on despite being unplugged from electrical sources, and antique clocks that chime spontaneously without mechanical prompts. Doors throughout the 28 remaining rooms open without cause, while guests discover mysterious depressions in their bed mattresses as if invisible occupants have settled in for the night. Professional paranormal investigators regularly document equipment failures and unexplained glass movements during their studies.

The hotel’s photography sessions frequently capture orb phenomena, while maintenance staff report tools moving on their own and phantom footsteps echoing through empty corridors. The Bullock Hotel represents the Wild West’s supernatural legacy, where the legendary sheriff’s dedication to law, order, and hospitality transcends death, creating an environment where guests experience both five-star service and frontier ghostly encounters.

My wife and I went there for our 25th Wedding anniversary. The atmosphere was nice, the room was clean and nice, but it was too small for two beds. The toilet was almost a joke to use with it being squeezed in-between the wall and sink. Luckily before we checked out my wife checked our account and discovered that we had a few hundred dollars in extra charges. From trying to charge us for and extra night to charging us for valet, which I was told was free with my room stay. And some magical hotel taxes that were never disclosed when the room was booked. That being said we did not see any ghosts. But the TV did change challenges on us a few times. There was a bang on the outside of our bedroom window. While using the bathroom the door for the closet kept creaking. When my wife approached it , the sound stopped. Last night I got very little sleep as something kept turning on her phone , so I would wake up up from the light. I looked at the phone and there was nothing that would have caused it to turn on. The first time it came on I looked at the nightstand in-between the beds (where phone was) and saw something go from my wife's side up to the arch in the ceiling and disappear. And finally this morning I felt someone sitting on my bed by my legs, so I shifted my body thinking it was my wife waking me up. I opened my eyes and no one was there, my wife was in the bathroom getting ready. And when I went to the bathroom to get ready, she was trying to make contact with her ghostbox and something was changing the frequency on it.

Staff goes above and beyond to meet guest needs. Valet parking is very convenient. We eat at paddy o'niels which conveniently is adjacent to the hotel. Burger and fries were outstanding. Now for our room. The room was very nice. Mattress was comfortable. The air and heating unit in our room was just ok. We would have liked it to cool the room more. Bathroom was very nice with beautiful glass doors. Everything was well supplied. There is also a safe in the closet. We stayed on the haunted 8th floor. Unfortunately we didn't experience any paranormal activity. Let me end with saying we would definitely stay here again.

If you don't believe that ghosts exist you will after staying here! The decor was amazing. Beautiful room and great staff! I would totally stay there again!

Why it's Haunted

Hotel Alex Johnson in Rapid City, South Dakota harbors one of the most tragic and well-documented hauntings in the American West, centered around the devastating story of the Lady in White.

In the 1970s, a bride crashed through Room 812’s eighth-floor window, plummeting eight stories to her death while clutching a torn photograph of her groom and a noose, creating a mystery that friends disputed as suicide despite official rulings.

Her spirit continues to inhabit the hotel, particularly drawn to Room 812 where her earthly tragedy unfolded. Alex Johnson himself, the hotel’s namesake who died in the building in 1938, maintains his eternal proprietorship by ensuring proper operations and appearing to staff and guests as a distinguished figure overseeing his beloved establishment.

A young girl, possibly Alex Johnson’s niece, adds an innocent dimension to the hauntings with her giggling and door-knocking heard throughout the 8th-floor hallways, her playful energy contrasting with the bride’s tragic presence. Featured on Ghost Hunters with documented significant paranormal activity, the hotel’s most haunted accommodations include rooms 304, 305, 812, and 802.

The establishment offers Ghost Adventure Packages complete with K2 meters for guests seeking supernatural encounters.

Paranormal experiences include deep recorded voices speaking from empty spaces, phantom footsteps echoing through corridors, doors opening autonomously, and trained paranormal dogs refusing to enter rooms with high EMF readings, confirming the hotel’s reputation as one of the most actively haunted locations in the Black Hills region.
