My husband and I enjoyed the night in the cottage. It wasn't the best, but far from the worst we have been in. The room was cute and very cozy with a jetted tub across from the bed haha. Had it's own private toilet (yay) after reading reviews of shared facilities I had my concerns. Although the tub didn't plug we were creative enough to work through the problem, since it was so late when we discovered this, my husband called the front desk but know one seemed able to help the situation. But I mean at least they tried and it wasn't worth a poor attitude. The pools here were not new! Very aged old hospital medical pools so don't judge to harshly. It's outside so leaves and bugs are there with you but it's nothing like an infestation. They could do more up keep on the paths all around, some parts were muddy, slippery, narrow and icy. I noticed after reading reviews that the place is possibly haunted, but they don't speculate much on that sadly and I was very disappointed. I would've like to know more about the history of the hospital and the ghost stories that have been shared. This place is very comfortable, not a lot of people, very close to main street and food/gift shops and a small grocery store store within walking distance. We had a great time and if you want to get away from everything and everyone is perfect, don't expect the Hilton, it's old and run down and it's age shows!

We love the history of the old hospital (paranormal activities) and touring the building. The staff was very friendly! Breakfast was very good. We love the hot springs pools, but they loose their appeal by letting the public use them also without having to stay there. The rooms also need some work, for example missing light bulbs etc.

Ghosts kept me up all night. 5 Star

Why it's Haunted

The Idaho City Hotel, nestled in the heart of Idaho’s historic gold rush country, has stood since the 1860s as a living reminder of the Wild West’s violence and prosperity. During its peak, Idaho City boasted 6,000 residents, making it the largest city in the Northwest Territory. Miners, gamblers, prostitutes, and outlaws filled its streets, and violent deaths were so frequent that the local cemetery became one of the largest boot hills in the West.

The hotel’s most famous haunting comes from a deadly gunfight on its front steps, where two men were killed in a bitter conflict. Their spirits still relive their final moments, with phantom gunshots echoing through the halls at night and shadowy figures seen battling before vanishing into thin air. Guests often report these chilling encounters, suggesting that their feud never ended — even in death.

Other ghostly figures include a mysterious man in a duster coat, believed to be a prospector from the city’s boom years, who roams the stairwell late at night. Outside, visitors have spotted two children playing marbles in the street, their innocent laughter providing a stark contrast to the lawlessness that once defined the town.

As Idaho City declined from bustling mining camp to near ghost town and finally to a preserved historic site, the hotel remained a constant witness to the rise and fall of frontier life. Today, guests can experience both its carefully restored 19th-century charm and authentic paranormal encounters, making it one of America’s most genuinely haunted Wild West hotels.

Phenomenons reported: World War I veteran rehabilitation, elderly patient care, therapeutic hot springs treatment, institutional death

When we checked in the lady and the first desk was polite and assigned us a room, we didn't book ahead which was just fine. But after we went up the stairs and entered the room, we started to question our surroundings, because the long hanging fan was shaking. Standing there confused with the door open, the desk lady walked by and said "Is everything ok? I wouldn't want to stay in that room." OMG, she just assigned us the room then says she wouldn't even sleep in it?! Me and my husband weren't too worried about ghosts, but should have left after that. However, we ended up asking if we could change rooms because we were worried about the fan falling on us. The next room wasn't much better, but at least we safe, or so we thought. After a restless night from the heat of the room and the noise from our neighbors, we woke to discover we had slept in a bed full of bed bugs. Our 18 month old slept in the bed with us!!!! I have over 50 bites over my body! From my shoulders to my toes. This is our first ever encounter with bed bugs, but certainly hope no one has to go through what we have. We certainly got a refund for our stay, but we haven't got a refund from the horror that we are facing now. Trying to heal from bites and battling the issue of infesting our own home, is a nightmare. Please, don't stay here. You will not be comfortable and you will regret it. You are better off sleeping in you car.

This place is disgusting the rooms are very unsanitary smells like feces. The staff is lazy and disrespectful. The pools are loaded with moss and debris. Turns out this used to be an old sanitarium and appears to be haunted. We immediately felt the negative energy and had to leave the property do not go here it's not a good place you will have a bad experience

Yep, it's a hotel. Seems clean, is nice, service was friendly and will tell you about their ghosts when asked. Did have an experience there, the ghost went through my mom, fun times.

Why it's Haunted

The Lava Hot Springs Inn & Spa in Idaho is known for both its healing waters and its chilling hauntings. Once a military hospital in the late 1930s, the facility was built to rehabilitate World War I veterans using the area’s natural hot springs. Later, it became a county hospital for elderly patients. Over decades, the building accumulated layers of death, trauma, and suffering, creating powerful supernatural imprints that linger to this day.

The most haunted space is Room 13, where guests have encountered Martha, a spirit who appears in a hospital gown and demands, “What are you doing here?” Her unsettling question and territorial behavior suggest she died there during treatment and remains bound to the space.

Other haunted rooms include Rooms 7 and 10, where an angry elderly woman’s spirit terrifies visitors with sudden appearances and aggressive energy, possibly tied to unresolved struggles from her final days as a patient. Guests have also reported seeing the ghost of a World War I soldier, who continues his eternal vigil with a presence marked by military discipline, protecting the space he once occupied in life.

The basement laundry room, once the hospital morgue, houses the Shadow Man, a dark, foreboding figure representing the countless bodies processed there.

Throughout the inn, visitors hear phantom footsteps, muffled conversations, doors slamming, and faucets turning on by themselves. Featured on Ghost Adventures and in Bruce Raisch’s Haunted Hotels of the West, the inn remains a place where natural healing and institutional tragedy collide, offering guests both relaxation and encounters with spirits who never left.
